A Carolina Christmas Tree

Here’s what happens when a burgeoning videographer, her girlfriend, and her girlfriend’s mom go get a Christmas tree in North Carolina.  Oh, and two of these people are from New Jersey.  I think that must factor in somehow.

If you’re wondering where you can find that catchy music, check out the Squirrel Nut Zippers “Christmas Caravan” album, circa 1998.  It’s full of toe-tapping awesomeness!

A Pearl on the Ocean Floor

A Pearl in the Sea

Last week, this Rumi poem inspired me to make some photographs (like this one, left; more below the poem) with a scarf, a pearl, and a very small whale.

This poem comes from The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks.

Book Release Party!

This past Sunday I was at Carol Woods Retirement Community for the official book release of my biography of Charles and Shirley Weiss, Giving Is Good For the Soul: The Life and Legacy of Charles and Shirley Weiss.

How exciting is that?  Super exciting!

Here’s a video clip of Charles and I talking about the book:

As you can see, Charles and I got to sit at the front table, along with book designer Meghan Lubker.   Continue reading

Fall delights

“Really? Satisfaction guaranteed?”

Yesterday afternoon, Erin and I left the house to go for a walk.  The air was crisp – so crisp that we needed full-fledged coats, not just jackets.  At the end of the driveway, I narrowly avoided stepping on a very slow-moving cricket.  Actually, I thought it was dead.  But then I saw it move – veeeeerry slightly – one tiny leg.  Perhaps it was very cold, and trying to conserve energy?

In any case, I picked up a handy leaflet that was lying on the ground and moved him (her?) over to the grass.  After taking the requisite photograph. Continue reading

Woollybear caterpillar in Carrboro

Tiny things

Yesterday, I was ambling home from Johnny’s after a lovely afternoon of working, drinking coffee, and bullshitting with Rock and Steve the mailman.  As I lollygagged down the sidewalk, I happened to step over a tiny thing:

Woollybear caterpillar in Carrboro

Don’t step on me!

A woollybear caterpillar was crawling across the sidewalk!  Now, how cool is that?  After snapping his (her?) picture, I watched fuzzy here complete his/her journey into the grass. Continue reading

Good morning, world

This morning, I woke up, fed the cats, and washed a lot of dishes.  Then I ate breakfast.  Then, I sat down to WRITE: quite an accomplishment, considering my abilities to procrastinate and avoid my personal writing (see dishes, above).  Here’s the space I’ve set up for myself to make writing more tempting/inviting/enjoyable…

Sunny Writing Desk

Sunlight likes to come in through my window in the morning and light up the pages.

My good friend Barbara recently turned me on to the Artist’s Way, which you can see open on the desk there; it’s kind of saved my creative life.  Who knew I could actually have FUN being creative again??  Not me!  Thanks, Barbara, and Artist’s Way. Continue reading
